Is Silverlight catching up with Flex?

From time to time I like to check this great tool in Indeed's Job Trends. This is an excellent example of a data visualization app, this small app lets you search job postings from many sites for different phrases and see they're popularity over time. As the below graph illustrates, MS Silverlight is certainly getting more popular but still has a long way to go in order to catch up with Flex.

At this gap between the two, I wouldn't consider titling this post as "catching up". It is more like, Silverlight is keeping it's head above water and even manages to float.

Good point but I suspect it's only a matter of time. I hear more and more about .Net developers who are adopting SL as they're client platform. Still the gap is huge as you mentioned.

Yeah, well, I might take those results with a pinch of salt. It looks like when you make a search with "Silverlight" instead of "Microsoft Silverlight" you get quite a different result...

One might say that "Flex" and not "Adobe Flex" also get quite a different result, but Flex might cover a wider ground than only Adobe's software (even though when you check the job ads for Flex you seem to get mostly Developer jobs):

At least, one thing is for sure: JavaFX is a no go...

Gilles, you are absolutely right, I initially tried to compare "Flex" to "Silverlight" but the term "Flex" would appear in many ads that are not related to "Adobe Flex", so that comparison is useless. I guess we should take the graph's results with a pinch of salt.

Svhilam, true, it's taking them time but don't forget they also have very deep pockets.

It is funny the way you titled your post "...catching up..". I don't think there's anyway from that graph that Silverlight is anywhere near Flex.

I was just reading a similar post - http://www.insideria.com/2009/07/flex-silverlight-job-trends.html, although there the author came up with somewhat the opposite results :)

In such cases one has to be sure that the things compared against each other legitimately allow for such comparison. My personal take will be that an Adobe Flex to Silverlight would not be a fair comparison.

Hi Reba, I agree, the comparison that is made there is not fair. But, as people commented here, the comparison I made might also not be 100% correct.
